How To Be Brilliant at Curating Concept at CDW24

Part of Michael Grubb Studio team Melissa, Anna and Abbie brilliantly delivered the session to help discover how to master the art of curating ideas and concepts in lighting design supported by Institute of Lighting Professionals, under the [d]arc thoughts talks programme at Clerkenwell Design Week 2024 in London.

‘How to Be Brilliant’ is a series of events run by Institution of Lighting Professionals to support people in the early part of their lighting career. This year the ILP series invited lighting designers, in the early stages of their careers, to present alongside senior members of their team as an initiative to encourage and support them in delivering talks and their ideas to wider audiences through public speaking.

At the session the team talked about the ways to master the art of curating ideas, what to look for and emphasised on importance of having creative outlook. Moreover, the MGS designers touched on the possible impact of AI in the lighting design industry during concept development. Additionally, the team shared some insight on how Michael Grubb Studio as a lighting design consultancy find inspiration for creating lighting schemes.

In Anna’s words: “We had so much fun together preparing the talk, first coming up with the key messages and example projects, then thinking how best to link it all together and engage the audience. When it came to the day, we were so pleased with everyone’s participation and really enjoyed the event!”

Abbie added: “I think it was an incredible opportunity to show others the thought process which goes into RIBA stage 2 Concept Design, this is something we wouldn’t usually be able to discuss in such detail. It was great to have so much audience participation which really allowed us to engage with everyone and be creative together.”

The Clerkenwell House of Detention, as a former prison, was a unique location for the event but apt given the talk was all about moving away from the norm, breaking rules and original thinking.
