Fostering Future Talent in Lighting Design: Our Commitment to Industry Growth
Investing in emerging talent is not just an initiative, but a responsibility.
For years, we have actively supported the next generation of designers through structured internships, mentoring, and industry-led learning opportunities. Our long-standing partnership with Arts University Bournemouth (AUB) reflects this commitment.

As part of our ongoing involvement, Melissa Byers, Head of Bournemouth Studio, and Project Lighting Designer Anna Freiesleben were recently invited to AUB to deliverĀ How to Be Brilliant at Curating Concept. The session helped students strengthen their approach to conceptual thinking in design, drawing on insights first shared at Clerkenwell Design Week 2024 and supported by Institution of Lighting Professionals, under the [d]arc thoughts talks programme. It explored the strategic and creative processes behind impactful design solutions, highlighting the importance of strong, narrative-driven concepts in professional practice.
Alongside knowledge-sharing sessions like these, we also work closely with AUB to prepare students for the realities of the industry. On a separate occasion, Melissa conducted mock industry interviews to support students as they take their first professional steps. These interviews provide real-world insights into hiring processes, helping students refine their approach, build confidence, and develop the skills needed to transition into the workplace.
Nurturing Future Talent in Lighting Design: Industry Experience at Michael Grubb Studio
This collaboration builds upon our long-established internship programme with AUB, where we welcome second-year students to gain hands-on experience in a professional setting. Interns work directly on live projects, engage with client briefs, and gain a first-hand understanding of studio life, bridging the gap between academia and industry. Many of our former interns have since transitioned into full-time roles within our team. Our Project Lighting Designers and Lighting Design Assistants began their careers with us through this programme, demonstrating the success of our future talent in Lighting Design development approach.
For Michael Grubb Studio, fostering new talent is integral to driving the industry forward. By supporting students in their early careers, we ensure that the next generation of lighting designers is equipped with the skills, knowledge, and experience to thrive.
