Baker Street Quarter, London
Michael Grubb Studio has been appointed by Baker Street Quarter Partnership to develop an area-wide festive Lighting Strategy that could be implemented over a number of years, with the intention of enhancing the unique identity of one of London’s most notorious areas by night.
North of the Quarter, sixteen lit festive geese act as gatekeepers leading to a further three site-specific installations at 55 Baker Street, Portman Square Garden and Manchester Garden just off of Bond Street, in the south – all linked by stunning illuminations along the length of Baker Street itself. All of the lighting will tell the rich story of the Baker Street Quarter through its’ famous people and places, such as the ‘Baker Street Bazaar’, ‘Marylebone Pleasure Garden’, Lady Montagu’s ‘Blue Stocking Parties’ and, not forgetting Sherlock Holmes, with themes from his only Christmas time escapade, ‘The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle’. All of the designs will be inspired and created by Michael Grubb Studio, crafted into beautiful, unique decorative festive illuminations with a difference.
Located in the very heart of London, the Partnership’s area of benefit has Baker Street and Gloucester Place as its’ spine and extends from (and includes) Portman Square and Wigmore Street in the south up to the Marylebone Road and Baker Street Station in the North. Other areas of significance include Manchester Square, home to the Wallace Collection and the world-famous waxwork museum, Madame Tussauds. The Quarter is also home to a wide range of bars, cafes, retail, offices and housing.
