In 2019, Michael Grubb Studio collaborated with the Baker Street Quarter Partnership to craft a bespoke festive lighting design, enhancing the area’s distinct nighttime identity. The project transformed the streetscape with sixteen illuminated geese at the northern gateway, symbolising the journey through three unique installations at 55 Baker Street, Portman Square Garden, and Manchester Garden near Bond Street. Each site was linked by dynamic light displays along Baker Street, unifying the experience.

Lighting Inspired by Historical Narrative

Drawing inspiration from Baker Street’s rich history, the designs celebrated its notable figures and landmarks. Influences included the Baker Street Bazaar, Marylebone Pleasure Garden, Lady Montagu’s Blue Stocking Parties, and Sherlock Holmes, nodding to “The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle.” The bespoke lighting installations were carefully tailored to honour the quarter’s heritage while creating distinctive decorative displays.

Located in central London, the scheme spanned from Portman Square and Wigmore Street to Marylebone Road and Baker Street Station. This vibrant area featured a mix of cultural landmarks, such as the Wallace Collection and Madame Tussauds, alongside bars, cafés, retail, offices, and residential spaces.

The scope of work encompassed strategy, concept development, detailed design, and construction. Michael Grubb Studio’s expertise in creative lighting design ensured the project achieved its goal of celebrating local identity while improving the urban environment for residents and visitors alike.

This project reflects Michael Grubb Studio’s dedication to delivering creative lighting designs that merge storytelling with practical urban enhancements. By crafting bespoke illuminations and strategic designs, the bespoke lighting scheme demonstrates how thoughtful lighting can transform spaces and celebrate local identity.
