Brent Cross Town Substation | London

Brent Cross Town is one of the largest net-zero urban regeneration projects in Europe, developed by Related Argent in partnership with Barnet Council. The £5 billion development is transforming the area into a thriving, sustainable neighbourhood featuring new homes, commercial spaces, and public amenities, all set within 50 acres of green space.

As part of this ambitious regeneration, the existing Brent Cross Town Electrical Substation has been reimagined as a large-scale public artwork. The design, conceived by London-based artist Lakwena in collaboration with architects IF_DO, features 21-metre-high painted steel girders that wrap around the substation, creating a striking visual statement.

Michael Grubb Studio was appointed as Executive Lighting Consultants to deliver and finalise the details of the lighting scheme designed by Arup, ensuring it aligns with the wider Brent Cross Town Lighting Masterplan. The lighting design enhances the visibility and impact of the artwork while integrating seamlessly with the surrounding urban environment.

The scheme is carefully crafted to be discreet yet effective, drawing attention to the artwork without overwhelming it. A halo of light surrounds the façade’s wrap, with illumination filtering through the structure and gradually fading towards the lower levels. This approach not only highlights the sculptural form but also contributes to a dynamic and engaging night-time experience.

Part of a Wider Brent Cross Town Lighting Strategy

Beyond the substation, Michael Grubb Studio developed the Brent Cross Town Lighting Masterplan and continues to work on multiple public realm projects within the area. These include:

  • Railway Street
  • High Street
  • Claremont Way
  • Claremont Park
  • Neighbourhood Square

In addition to exterior lighting, the studio has expanded its involvement to include interior lighting for key communal spaces, such as lobbies, roof terraces, swimming pools, gyms, and meeting areas. Our lighting design consultants remain committed to delivering innovative, site-responsive lighting solutions that enhance public spaces and contribute to the long-term success of urban regeneration projects.

“The lighting design compliments and draws focus to the artwork itself, creating a new and dynamic experience to extend the public’s enjoyment of the artwork beyond daytime, injecting further life and depth after dark. Lighting was also key to creating a stunning, eye-catching display that would attract attention from the passing motorway traffic and adjacent railway line, as well as inspire those who live close by.”
