Dalston Roof Park Gardens, London
Dalston Roof Park has become one of the most popular summer time destinations in London. Run by Bootstrap, a community charity, whose mission is to unlock local potential.
Michael Grubb Studio was approached by Bootstrap to create a unique atmosphere that supported evening events and activities after dark.
Our concept was ‘Sunset, all night long’ which was achieved through the use of white light and a limited range of yellow, amber and red coloured filters. This approach allowed us to mimic sunset and create a unique atmosphere where visitors experienced the subtly of colour.
Natural and artificial light was used in unison within the Main Event Space. Specially manufactured triangles consisting of coloured filter and integral LED’s provided a stained-glass window effect during the day but were illuminated and sequenced to transform the space by night.
Lighting within the Bar was inspired by studio photography lighting techniques, where two different colours are projected from adjacent angles. This simple approach using coloured filters allowed us to create the sensation of a late sunset, which in turn provides a warm glow that complimented skin tone.
Finally, a unique lighting solution was developed where LED technology was incorporated within the irrigation system. This cost-effective approach matched the ethos of the project and created a warm glowing effect to the planters and barrels that acted as meeting points.
The Roof Park is now a thriving event space which houses a wide range of events and activities throughout the year. The lighting scheme is flexible and can be reconfigured in the future as needed.
The project relied heavily on the enthusiasm, generosity and commitment of so many people. You know who you are – and we are very thankful.
