Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Visitor Centre | Abu Dhabi, UAE
The Light & Peace Visitor Experience is an immersive exhibition located beneath the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. It invites visitors to explore themes of faith, coexistence, and shared humanity.
Lighting a Journey of Faith and Coexistence
Michael Grubb Studio was appointed by Ralph Appelbaum Associates to provide the lighting design for the 1,050-square-metre permanent exhibition, which seamlessly weaves together different aspects of Islam. Through the use of height, light, sound, and scent, it creates a sense of openness and shared experience.
Inspired by Islamic geometry and architecture, the layout features intersecting circles that form curved walls, partitions, and thematic spaces, echoing the design of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque itself.
Illuminating the Narrative of Visitor Experience
At the heart of the exhibition is the theme of tolerance, a principle deeply embedded in Sheikh Zayed’s vision. He regarded Islam as a faith of justice, compassion, and respect, calling on followers to treat all human beings as equals, regardless of creed or race. His belief in peaceful coexistence shaped the UAE into a society where mosques, churches, and temples stand side by side, providing space for people of all faiths to gather in worship. This inclusive spirit is enshrined in law and continues to be reflected in the daily lives of Emiratis.
Illuminating Faith: The Symbolism of Light
The lighting design takes inspiration from the Qur’anic verse God is the Light of the heavens and the earth, embracing light as a unifying force that connects the celestial and the earthly. Through a carefully curated interplay of brightness and shadow, the exhibition guides visitors on a contemplative journey, using shifts in colour temperature and intensity to highlight key moments. Exhibition and architectural lighting blend with media elements to create an immersive atmosphere, drawing visitors into the narrative.
A Multisensory Experience Across Five Galleries
The visitor experience unfolds across five interconnected galleries, presented in seven languages. The journey begins in near darkness, where subtle lighting installations set an introspective tone. A projection introduces the exhibition’s key themes before leading to a central space that highlights Sheikh Zayed’s legacy, the Grand Mosque, and the UAE’s role as a beacon of tolerance. From here, visitors are invited to explore the grand mosques of Mecca, Medina, and Jerusalem, each represented by sculptural pavilions that capture their architectural essence. Within these spaces, immersive films bring to life the spiritual and cultural significance of each site, while hero artefacts are displayed with digital captions that provide deeper context.
Precision in Lighting and Conservation
The lighting design plays a critical role in shaping this experience, balancing symbolism with conservation requirements. Most artefacts require carefully controlled 50 lux lighting, ensuring their preservation while maintaining the desired ambience. All exhibition lighting is dimmable and individually controlled via DALI, allowing for precise on-site adjustments. Feature lighting is integrated with AV show control systems, using DMX to synchronise colour and dimming sequences with digital media. This coordination of light, sound, and space enhances the exhibition’s immersive quality, creating a seamless and evocative journey.
Bringing Light to the Message of Unity
More than an exhibition, The Light & Peace Visitor Experience is a testament to the values of faith, tolerance, and human connection, brought to life through architecture, technology, and light.
